A delegation from the Australia Pacific Islands Business Council (APIBC), led by President Simon Gorman, is set to embark on a significant business mission in the Northern Pacific, starting on March 4. This mission includes the formal signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in key locations: Nauru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Guam.

The MoU with Nauru will be signed in person on March 4, following an earlier virtual signing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Subsequent agreements are scheduled for March 6 in the Marshall Islands and March 9 in Guam. Each of these MoUs aims to enhance private sector connections, promote inclusive economic growth, and support job creation through coordinated business cooperation.

These agreements will create a framework for collaboration between the APIBC and local business chambers and industry bodies. They emphasize important aspects such as trade promotion, investment facilitation, business networking, and capacity development, designed to foster engagement between Australian companies and Northern Pacific businesses, including specific sector-related cooperation and joint initiatives.

APIBC President Simon Gorman highlighted the importance of this mission, stating, “From signing MOUs with the Marshall Islands and Guam Chambers of Commerce and following up on relationships arising out of the APIBC infrastructure forum with delegations in Nauru and Palau, we have a jam-packed itinerary ahead of us.”

Guam’s recent status as an Associate Member of the Pacific Islands Forum makes this mission particularly significant, marking the first formal interaction between the APIBC and a PIF member industry body in the territory. This engagement underscores the growing acknowledgment of Guam’s strategic importance in the Northern Pacific.

Additionally, the delegation will visit Manila to engage with senior executives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), focusing on enhancing collaboration on Pacific programs following a successful Pacific Infrastructure Conference in Brisbane. They will discuss future regional infrastructure engagement, which includes an upcoming Pacific Infrastructure Business Opportunities Seminar scheduled for Nadi in May 2026.

Australia has long-standing economic and development partnerships in the Pacific region, particularly in Nauru and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, where Australian companies are involved in various sectors like infrastructure, professional services, energy, and logistics. This mission seeks to not only deepen these existing relationships but also to explore new avenues for commercial collaboration.

Throughout this mission, the APIBC delegation will engage with government officials, business leaders, and development partners to foster dialogue on trade, investment, infrastructure development, and the growth of the private sector across the Northern Pacific, aiming for a prosperous future for all parties involved.
