Angeles Crest Highway has been closed due to damage sustained from severe winter storms, which have impacted sections of the road known for offering breathtaking views and access to hiking trails within the forest. The closure affects State Route 2 between Cedar Springs—located 3.3 miles east of Newcomb’s Ranch—and State Route 138, as confirmed by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Damages have been reported at multiple sites, with the highway showing signs of significant wear, including boulders strewn across the roadway and areas where the pavement has buckled. On social media, Caltrans shared images depicting these hazardous conditions, alongside footage of a wheel loader being utilized to clear a large boulder from the road.

The ongoing closure is particularly notable as it follows recent efforts to restore a different 10-mile stretch of the highway that had been shut down for years due to storm and wildfire damage, costing approximately $7.9 million in repairs. The combined impact of heavy winter storms and the erosion of fire-scarred hillsides has contributed to the instability of the highway’s infrastructure, increasing the risk of rockslides.

As of now, Caltrans has not provided an estimated reopening date for the affected section of Angeles Crest Highway, leaving local residents and visitors awaiting updates.
