The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has officially commenced its milestone 2025–26 season, marked by a spectacular opening night gala on December 3 at New York City Center. Esteemed figures Colman Domingo, a two-time Oscar nominee, and global music sensation Ciara played pivotal roles as Honorary Chair and Honored Guest, respectively, setting a vibrant tone for the evening.
Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack expressed the significance of the event, stating, “Tonight marks more than an opening night. It is a continuation of a dream that began 67 years ago in the heart and mind of one visionary man: Alvin Ailey.” Graf Mack emphasized her commitment to sharing diverse identities and stories through the art of dance, reflecting Ailey’s vision of cultural representation.
In a heartfelt reflection, Graf Mack acknowledged the legacy of Judith Jamison, the late Artistic Director Emerita, who served alongside Ailey and profoundly influenced the company. Jamison’s passing in November 2024 was a somber milestone, and Graf Mack expressed admiration for her mentorship, saying, “She has always been my North Star.”
The gala, honoring Daria L. Wallach for her leadership on the AILEY Board of Trustees, showcased the company’s renowned dancers delivering performances rich in athleticism and emotional storytelling rooted in Black history and spirituality. Ciara introduced the evening’s grand finale with a powerful rendition of Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece “Revelations,” performed with a live choir that added depth and energy to the performance.
The event featured notable premieres, such as Medhi Walerski’s “Blink of an Eye,” accompanied by Grammy-winning violinist Melissa White, and a new rendition of Judith Jamison’s “A Case of You,” beautifully performed by five-time Grammy winner Samara Joy.
Following the performances, attendees gathered at the Ziegfeld Ballroom for a night of dinner and dancing, celebrating the arts and community. The gala was a resounding success, raising over $2.7 million to support new artistic projects, scholarships at The Ailey School, and educational initiatives aimed at fostering talent in young people through dance.
As part of the evening’s launch, AILEY outlined plans for a five-week holiday engagement at New York City Center featuring both world premieres and beloved classics like “Revelations.” The company is set to embark on an exciting national tour spanning more than 20 cities, including major metropolitan areas from January to May 2026.
Graf Mack captured the spirit of the evening on social media, expressing gratitude and optimism for the journey ahead, stating, “Let’s keep this energy going.” The season promises to be a vibrant continuation of Alvin Ailey’s vision, uniting audiences through the transformative power of dance.
