New Zealand Rugby has officially announced that Scott Robertson is no longer the head coach of the All Blacks, marking a significant managerial shift halfway through his four-year contract. This decision comes on the heels of an internal review regarding the team’s performance in the lead-up to the 2025 season, which identified considerable shortcomings in Robertson’s coaching style and leadership.

The review was spearheaded by NZR chairman David Kirk, along with board member and former All Black player Keven Mealamu, and former high-performance manager Don Tricker. Following a thorough evaluation of the findings, the NZR board determined that a change was necessary and will commence the search for a new head coach immediately.

Kirk noted that this timing coincides with the midpoint of the current Rugby World Cup cycle, providing a timely opportunity to assess the team’s trajectory. He emphasized the importance of evaluating both on-field and off-field progress as they prepare for a demanding schedule in 2026, ultimately focusing on the 2027 World Cup as the key objective.

In light of these discussions, both Robertson and NZR have mutually agreed that parting ways is in the best interest of the All Blacks. Robertson expressed his deep disappointment regarding the outcome, calling his experience coaching the national team “the honor of my life.” His tenure, while featuring a decent winning record of 20 victories in 27 tests and a success rate of 74%, was marred by inconsistency, highlighted by some of the team’s worst defeats, including a historic loss to South Africa in Wellington and a first-ever defeat against Argentina on their home turf.

Despite these setbacks, Robertson also managed to achieve significant milestones, such as preserving the All Blacks’ unbeaten streak at Eden Park against the Springboks and successfully defending the Bledisloe Cup. However, underlying issues had reportedly surfaced within the squad as early as late 2024, indicating that Robertson had lost the confidence of some players.

Kirk thanked Robertson for his contributions to New Zealand rugby, underlining his dedication and commitment to the All Blacks. He remarked on Robertson’s passion for the sport, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

This transition in leadership presents an opportunity for a fresh direction for the All Blacks as they gear up for the critical upcoming seasons, fostering hope for a renewed drive towards international success.
