The organizers of the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s are introducing an exciting change for their upcoming 14th annual event, which is set to take place next week at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. For the first time, they will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to determine the pool draws, enhancing the competitive edge of the tournament.

The buzz among fans is palpable, particularly regarding the men’s division, which Tournament Co-Founder Jay Whyte has referred to as “the pool of death.” Group A features an impressive lineup, including the highly regarded Fiji Babas, who are coming off two consecutive championships. They will face off against strong contenders such as the five-time champions Police, the Seattle Barbarians from the USA, and Australia’s Nationwide Sydney Nadi.

Excitement also surrounds Pool C, which includes notable teams like USA 7s, Mike Friday Select, Dominion Brothers, and the Chennai Bulls from India, led by coach Ben Gollings.

Whyte noted that the AI system was programmed with specific guidelines to ensure a balanced representation of local and international teams. The top national teams were carefully seeded, with the AI managing the remaining placements. This innovative application of technology highlights how AI can enhance traditional sporting events.

The Coral Coast 7s will kick off next Thursday, with fans able to enjoy all the action live and exclusively on FBC Sports. This year’s tournament not only promises thrilling matches but also represents the evolving landscape of rugby sevens in the region, suggesting an exciting future for the sport.
