At the age of 49, former Fiji Bulikula captain Josephine Maejiirs is proving that age is merely a number as she competes in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s. As the oldest participant in this year’s tournament, Maejiirs exhibits incredible resilience and athleticism, going head-to-head with athletes significantly younger than her.

While still actively involved in the rugby league in Australia, where she plays for the Terrigal Sharks in Sydney, Maejiirs uses rugby sevens as a strategic means to maintain her fitness throughout the year. “For me, coming into sevens is about keeping the engine running,” she shared, highlighting her continuous dedication to the sport. “We finish rugby league and step straight into sevens, and then after this, I go back into league pre-season. It’s a strategic way to stay fit, mobile, and ready for the next season.”

Having previously participated in the Coral Coast 7s, this year marks her third time at the event. Maejiirs has also brought her own Sydney-based sevens team to the tournament in the past, demonstrating her commitment to rugby and her passion for competition. She expressed her excitement about playing against quality teams and competing with national sides, saying, “When I messaged and said I’ll see you at Coral Coast, they asked if I was playing or managing. I said, No, I’m actually playing.”

Her team reflects the tournament’s diverse spirit, composed of athletes from the USA, UK, Japan, and Australia, all united in their quest for success. Maejiirs emphasized that they are serious contenders, aiming to make it to the finals. “We want to compete. We’re all athletes from different backgrounds, and we want to push for the finals. If the weather plays its part and we come together as a team, we believe we can go far.”

Beyond the competition, Maejiirs strives to empower women of all ages, encouraging both young girls and older women to believe in themselves. “To young girls and older women, believe in yourself. No one else will do it for you. Carry that belief wherever you go, and with God on your side, it will happen.”

She credited her support system at home, including her Terrigal Sharks family, children, and grandchildren, for her unwavering dedication to the sport. Maejiirs’ participation at the Coral Coast 7s not only underscores her commitment to rugby but also serves as an inspiring reminder that passion, determination, and belief can indeed transcend age limitations.
