Maikah Dau made a remarkable debut for Extra Supermarket Bula FC in their opening match of the OFC Pro League yesterday, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning football career. The 16-year-old star previously captained the Fiji Under-16 team during last year’s OFC U-16 Men’s Championship and was later selected for the national squad competing in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Dau’s swift ascent through the ranks and his demonstrated leadership skills at the youth international level made his inclusion in Bula FC’s starting line-up a logical choice. Prior to taking the field, he received a phone call from his family, which he credits with boosting his confidence. “Yes, my mother called me yesterday before my game and I was able to talk with my family. I was nervous but talking to them gave me confidence to perform,” Dau said.

As he walked through the stadium tunnel and onto the pitch, he felt time slow down, a testament to the importance of the moment for the young athlete. Bula FC is set to face South Island United tomorrow at 2pm, with fans able to catch the action live on FBC Two.

Dau’s journey epitomizes the bright future of Fiji football, showcasing the talent emerging from the region and the support of family and community in shaping young athletes’ careers. With more matches ahead, the enthusiasm surrounding Bula FC and its promising players like Dau continues to grow, bringing hope for an exciting season.
