At just 16 years old, Akosita Levaci is making a significant impact in the world of cricket, having progressed from playing on the village ground of Kabara Island in Fiji’s Lau Group to representing her country in prestigious regional tournaments. A standout player on the Fiji Women’s Under-19 squad, Levaci was among the youngest participants in a recent tournament held in New Caledonia.

Cricket holds a special place in the hearts of children in Kabara Island, and for Levaci, her passion for the sport developed naturally. “I started playing cricket when I was in primary school, and since most of my cousins and relatives back in the village always play as well, I grew to love the sport,” she shared. She recounted how local competitions during events like Fiji Day fostered her enthusiasm for the game. “My parents were very happy when I told them that I had made the team, and they just reminded me to work hard and be humble,” Levaci added.

One of the most rewarding aspects of her journey has been the camaraderie formed with her teammates, whom she describes as family. As she strives to secure a place in the final squad for the national women’s under-19 team heading to the World Cup Qualifiers in Papua New Guinea next April, Levaci remains focused and determined.

Levaci’s story is not only an inspiration for young athletes in Fiji but also highlights the importance of sports in bringing communities together. With her dedication and passion, she has the potential to contribute significantly to the growth of cricket in the region.
