After a week of backlash from the surfing community, Vans has reversed its initial decision regarding Jamie O’Brien’s participation in the upcoming Vans Pipe Masters. Initially placed in an alternate position for the prestigious event, O’Brien has now been restored to the main roster. However, he still expresses dissatisfaction with the company.
The controversy ignited when fellow pro surfer Josh Moniz voiced his discontent on Instagram, revealing that he thought O’Brien deserved more recognition than simply an alternate. Following this, the surfing community rallied together online, criticizing Vans for its handling of the event, especially since the Pipe Masters had lost its place on the Championship Tour and was re-established as a standalone event in 2022.
In a follow-up Instagram post, O’Brien shared his own disappointment, revealing that Vans representatives had questioned his age and his suitability for the event. He also listed several other esteemed surfers he believed merited invitations to this elite competition.
A week later, in response to the outcry, Vans announced his inclusion in the official roster. O’Brien conveyed his gratitude to his supporters through an Instagram post, stating, “GUESS WHO’S BACK IN THE EVENT,” emphasizing the role of the community in this outcome.
However, O’Brien remains critical of Vans, stating that the company is undermining the event’s legacy built by earlier generations of surfers. He argued that they should return the title of Pipeline Masters to the World Surf League (WSL), which historically managed the event well. O’Brien expressed concern that those making decisions do not have a proper understanding of the surfing culture and the talent required at Pipeline, pointing out that despite being labeled “too old,” he consistently showcases top performance.
He reinforced that his grievances extend beyond his own situation, highlighting the exclusion of numerous respected surfers from the list, which he believes disrespects the entire surfing community. “I think it’s about our community. I think it’s the disrespect that Vans brings to our community,” he explained, stressing the need for accountability within the corporation for their choices.
Despite the challenges posed by this situation, there is a hopeful note within the surfing community. The collective voice of the surfers has demonstrated the power of advocacy, showing that unity can lead to positive change. If Vans listens further to the sentiments of the surfing world, it may pave the way for a more inclusive and respectful approach to events and the athletes who have dedicated their lives to the sport.
