Netflix has confirmed that its hit political thriller The Night Agent will conclude with a fourth and final season, a surprising decision that comes only a few months after the show was renewed. The streamer said season four is already in production and is expected to arrive on the platform in 2027, bringing an end to the series that launched in 2023 and quickly became one of Netflix’s breakout hits.
Series creator Shawn Ryan, who has shepherded the show since its debut, issued a statement thanking Netflix and Sony Pictures Television and promising a “definitive final season” for the show’s protagonist, FBI agent Peter Sutherland. “Ever since the initial success of ‘The Night Agent,’ I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” Ryan said. “We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
The Night Agent, led by Gabriel Basso as Sutherland, is based on Matthew Quirk’s 2019 novel of the same name. The television adaptation quickly outpaced its source material, with later seasons developing original plotlines and expanding the story world. The series’ first season was Netflix’s most-watched show in the first half of 2023 and has maintained a sizeable global audience across subsequent seasons; it holds an average approval rating of about 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
For its swan song, Ryan said the creative team has shifted the action west. Season four will be set primarily in Los Angeles, marking a departure from the show’s previous New York-centric settings and foregoing the international excursions that appeared in earlier seasons. “There’s something in the Los Angeles region that exists at a much bigger level than New York,” Ryan said, framing the final season as a new kind of threat and a geographic reset for the series.
