Nintendo has confirmed that Star Fox 64 is being remade for the company’s next console, the Switch 2, and will arrive on June 25, 2026. The announcement came in an unadvertised Star Fox Direct that Nintendo released without prior notice on Wednesday, revealing updated visuals and a suite of modern features built around the original on-rails shooter.
The Switch 2 edition appears to largely follow the level design and story of the 1997 Nintendo 64 classic — Fox McCloud and his wingmates Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare and Slippy Toad battling exiled scientist Andross across the Lylat system — but adds newly produced cutscenes and mission briefings that were not in the N64 version. Nintendo showed footage of redesigned environments and character models, and said the remake includes new in-game challenges and the return of PvP modes that expand multiplayer beyond the original’s offering.
Nintendo also highlighted several control and social features specific to the Switch 2 build. The game will support mouse controls and the reissued N64 controller planned for the console, and it will use Game Chat avatars that mimic players’ facial expressions during online play. Those elements suggest Nintendo is tailoring the remake to both modern control schemes and contemporary social features rather than delivering a straight visual upgrade.
Star Fox 64 has already been revisited twice in recent years: it received a 3DS remake and remains available through Nintendo’s Switch Online Expansion Pack. The new Switch 2 release, however, appears positioned as the definitive next-generation version, with added cinematics and new gameplay modes designed to appeal to returning fans and newcomers alike.
The surprise timing of the Direct stood out. Nintendo usually gives advance notice for its digital showcases; this one dropped a day before the company was due to publish quarterly earnings and amid several months of sliding stock prices that began after the 2025 holiday period. The company’s sudden reveal — following a leak that hinted at the remake earlier this spring — will put Star Fox at the center of Nintendo’s marketing push heading into the summer.

The character has also enjoyed broader mainstream visibility recently: Fox McCloud made a notable cameo in the Super Mario Galaxy movie released earlier this year, in which the role was played by actor Glenn Powell. Whether that cross-media exposure, combined with millennial nostalgia for N64-era franchises, will translate into strong sales for the Switch 2 remake remains to be seen. Nintendo’s June 25 launch date will be an early test of consumers’ appetite for refreshed classics on the company’s next console.
