San Antonio's young forward Carter Bryant is "trending well" and could return for Wednesday's Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves after missing the series opener with a foot issue, the Spurs said Tuesday, according to an Associated Press report by Raul Dominguez Jr.
Head coach Mitch Johnson tempered expectations, saying Bryant appears to have a good chance of playing but that the club will not rush him back. Johnson added that if Bryant is unable to play in Game 2, he should be ready to suit up for Game 3. The 20-year-old's availability will be monitored as the Spurs balance short-term needs in the series with his longer-term recovery.
Bryant logged limited minutes in San Antonio's first-round series with Portland, averaging 3.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.6 blocks in 9.2 minutes per game. Those numbers come from a small sample of playoff minutes but underscore his current role as a situational connector off the bench rather than a heavy-usage player. He did not appear in Monday night's opener against Minnesota.
Should Bryant be cleared to play, Spurs staff expect to bring him along cautiously; he would likely see only brief, specific-minute stints rather than extended court time. Johnson indicated the plan would be to deploy Bryant in limited situations where his skills on both ends of the floor could have the most impact without overtaxing his recovering foot.
San Antonio's decision on Bryant will be one of several rotation questions the team faces as it adjusts to the Timberwolves in the second round. With playoff rotations tightened and matchups magnified, the coaching staff is weighing the potential short-term boost of adding Bryant against the risk of aggravating his injury. The Spurs have shown a willingness this postseason to manage younger players' minutes, and Bryant's status will be a bellwether for how aggressively they rotate their bench going forward.
