Spotify recovered from an hours‑long service disruption on Tuesday that left many users unable to log in or quickly load playlists, the company said. The issue began around noon Eastern Time on May 12, 2026, and Spotify’s status account and support page reported the situation was “all clear now” shortly before 5 p.m. ET, though the company did not disclose what caused the interruption.
The first public acknowledgement came via Spotify’s X account just after reports began to spike, with the company saying it was “aware of some issues right now with the app and are checking them out.” Users sent an uptick of problem reports to outage tracker DownDetector starting around midday, reflecting widespread but uneven access problems rather than a total blackout. Many listeners reported blank screens or long delays before playlists would load; others were able to resume playback after a few minutes.
Inside the service, experiences varied. While some listeners regained access quickly, others continued to see blank or frozen screens even after Spotify’s all‑clear post. The company advised anyone still unable to access the platform to contact its support team for help. Spotify’s public updates did not include technical details, an estimated number of affected users, or whether the disruption impacted any backend systems such as account authentication or content delivery.
The incident follows a pattern of intermittent outages across major apps earlier this spring. Platforms including X and Reddit experienced brief but noticeable access issues in April, according to outage trackers and user reports. Those events underscore how a single service disruption can ripple across workflows, commutes and streaming habits that rely on these always‑on platforms.
For many users the outage was an irritant rather than a catastrophe, with playback returning without action in most cases. But the lack of a root‑cause explanation leaves open questions for power users, artists who depend on streaming metrics, and enterprises that embed music in retail or hospitality settings. Spotify has not indicated whether it will publish a post‑incident report.
