Slack experienced a widespread service disruption on Thursday, May 14, with thousands of users reporting problems sending and receiving messages, according to outage monitor Downdetector. The monitoring site logged more than 2,000 user complaints by 7:35 a.m. Pacific Time and saw that number climb to more than 4,000 by 7:51 a.m., as users across organizations reported interruptions to core messaging functions.

Downdetector’s live map and incident feed showed the bulk of reports flagged issues with message delivery, and Slack’s own status page reflected corresponding outages, listing problems under “Messaging” and “Apps, Integrations & APIs.” The status page acknowledged the disruption but, as of the latest available update, offered no firm timeline for when full service would be restored.

Outage trackers collect real-time reports from users across platforms and outlets, and while they provide an early gauge of the scope and intensity of an incident, they do not represent an official measure of affected customers. Still, the volume of reports and Slack’s status acknowledgement signaled a disruption with the potential to affect enterprise workflows: Slack is widely used by businesses, nonprofits and public agencies for internal coordination and application integrations.

Users reported errors and delays in sending and receiving messages, symptoms that can cascade into broader productivity impacts when channels and integrated tools are inaccessible. Slack’s integrations and APIs also being flagged on the status page suggests problems extended beyond simple message transmission to connected apps that many organizations rely on for automation, notifications and third‑party services.

The outage comes amid a run of intermittent, short‑lived disruptions across major online platforms in recent weeks. Monitoring services logged significant complaint spikes for other services in April — including the social platform X, the decentralized network Bluesky and Reddit — with most incidents resolved within hours. Those events underscored the fragility of always‑on communications infrastructure and the downstream effects outages can have on users and businesses.

As of the last update reported to Downdetector, Slack continued to register thousands of user reports. Users and IT teams seeking the latest information were directed to Slack’s status page for updates on remediation progress and restoration timelines.
