Six middle school students were taken to a local hospital Wednesday after appearing to eat THC gummies at Round Lake Middle School, officials in a north suburban Illinois district said.

Round Lake Area Schools Community Unit School District 116 confirmed the incident and said the students, all enrolled at Round Lake Middle School, were transported to a nearby hospital and were in stable condition. The district said it is working with Round Lake Heights police to investigate what happened.

Video recorded at the scene showed multiple ambulances from different fire departments responding to the school. One clip circulating online captured a student who appeared alert as they were placed into an ambulance. The district has not released names, ages or further medical details about the students, citing privacy concerns.

THC gummies are cannabis-infused edibles that can look like ordinary candy, and health officials have previously warned that accidental ingestion by children and teens can lead to serious symptoms including extreme drowsiness, vomiting, difficulty breathing and altered mental status. Local emergency responders typically stabilise patients and monitor vital signs; treatment is generally supportive care tailored to symptoms.

The school district said it will cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds. Officials did not specify whether the gummies were found on school property, whether they were brought from off campus, or whether disciplinary action or criminal charges are expected; those questions remain under review by police.

Incidents in which students become ill after consuming cannabis edibles have prompted schools and public health authorities in other communities to issue safety advisories about proper storage and packaging of such products. District 116 did not say whether it planned to send further information to families or hold a meeting; parents and guardians in the community are awaiting updates as investigators gather facts.

Investigators with Round Lake Heights police and school officials continue to probe the circumstances of the incident. Authorities have not released a timeline or additional findings; the situation remains under active review.
