Born Sylvester Stewart, Stone grew up in a religious family in Denton, Texas, before relocating to Vallejo, California, where his passion for music blossomed early on. After recording gospel music with his siblings as The Stewart Four, he adopted the nickname “Sly,” a moniker that would become synonymous with his innovative style. His diverse musical talents flourished during his adolescence, leading him to form various groups, including the multi-racial doo-wop group, The Viscaynes.
In 1966, Sly merged his band with his brother’s ensemble, creating Sly & the Family Stone.
