Nuggets’ Playoff Woes: Is Jokić’s Health at Risk?

The Denver Nuggets have two primary objectives this postseason: securing wins and ensuring the health of their star center, Nikola Jokić. Although they have been successful in achieving the former, the latter has become increasingly concerning as the playoffs progress.

Jokić has been subjected to aggressive physical play, particularly from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Following the Thunder’s commanding 149-106 victory over the Nuggets in Game 2, Denver’s Aaron Gordon expressed frustration over the treatment of Jokić, urging officials to better enforce the rules regarding physical play.

Gordon pointed out the myriad ways Jokić has been fouled, saying, “If they’re going to let them push him and shove him… that’s not necessarily legal.” He emphasized that Jokić has to endure this tough play, but insisted that the fouls being committed against him are clear and should be more frequently called. Despite the argument regarding the officiating, Jokić did ultimately fouled out in the third quarter, contributing to the team’s struggle to stage a comeback. He ended the game with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.

In total, the game saw a relatively even distribution of fouls, with Denver committing 29 and Oklahoma City tallying 24. However, the disparity was overshadowed by the Nuggets’ significant loss. Gordon acknowledged this reality in his post-game remarks.

This isn’t the first time this postseason that concerns over Jokić’s treatment have been raised. Earlier in their playoff run, Nuggets interim coach David Adelman had similarly criticized the refereeing after a series against the Los Angeles Clippers, claiming that Jokić had been “allowed to do whatever they want.” That griping came after a significant Game 6, but the Nuggets were able to prevail in the following Game 7, setting the stage for their current series against the Thunder.

The Nuggets’ performance in Game 2 has amplified their frustrations, reflected in Gordon’s assertion that “we got punked,” according to Adelman’s critique. With the playoff series now tied at 1-1, the Nuggets face a crucial Game 3 on Friday. As long as Jokić can stay healthy and on the court, there remains hope for reclaiming the series lead.

The situation highlights the physical nature of playoff basketball, emphasizing the need for player protection while maintaining competitive intensity. The Nuggets will need to adjust their strategies as they prepare for the next challenge.
