Melissa Barrera says being removed from the upcoming Scream 7 and the public backlash over her social media posts about Gaza cost her months of work but also forced a reinvention that she believes will shape the next phase of her career. In a wide-ranging interview with Variety published this week, the Mexican-American actor described professional isolation, a new focus on theatre and plans to launch her own production company as she rebuilds in Hollywood.
Barrera was dropped from the long-running horror franchise in late 2023 after she publicly criticised the Israeli government’s military actions and shared posts advocating for Palestinian civilians. At the time production company Spyglass Media Group released a statement saying it had “zero tolerance” for antisemitism or hate speech; Barrera has strongly rejected the accusation that her remarks were antisemitic. In the interview she reiterated that her intent was to speak about civilian suffering and said she stood by expressing those views.
The fallout, she said, was immediate and tangible. Barrera told Variety that she felt professionally isolated and that job opportunities “dried up” for months after the controversy, describing the period as a turning point that forced her to rethink her identity beyond screen acting. That break from film and television work, she said, prompted fresh thinking about where she finds creative fulfilment and what she wants from her career going forward.
One visible result has been a move to the stage: Barrera is currently appearing in the Broadway production Titaníque, which she credited with providing “a sense of creative fulfilment and stability” after a turbulent stretch in Hollywood. For Barrera, theatre has been a place to reconnect with performance away from the heightened scrutiny of social-media-driven controversies and franchise politics.
She also told Variety she is conscious of what she sees as uneven enforcement of consequences in the industry. Barrera suggested that other public figures have been able to voice similar opinions without suffering comparable professional setbacks, a disparity she said has been difficult to reconcile while navigating the fallout from her own statements.

Looking ahead, Barrera said she is focused on rebuilding and broadening her role in entertainment. She plans to launch a production company and is developing projects she hopes will give her more control over the stories she tells and the contexts in which she works. While the Scream 7 episode remains a defining moment, Barrera framed it as a catalyst: she is moving forward “with renewed determination and a broader perspective” on her future in the business.
