Marvel is venturing into the fighting game realm once again with an exciting new title, “Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls,” announced today during the State of Play event. Collaborating with Arc System Works, known for their intricate fighting gameplay, and PlayStation Studios, Marvel is set to deliver a fresh yet familiar experience in the gaming world.
This new game will introduce players to dynamic 4v4 team battles featuring a host of beloved Marvel characters. The trailer showcased iconic heroes and villains, including Captain America, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Ghost Rider, Doctor Doom, and Storm, with hopes of adding even more characters before its release.
Taking inspiration from the renowned Marvel vs. Capcom series, Marvel Tokon aims to include classic mechanics like assists, tags, and large combo moves, while also innovating with unique tag team attacks. Each character will possess a range of moves, including normal, special, and unique abilities, alongside powerful cinematic Ultimate Skills to make battles even more thrilling.
In an effort to make the game accessible to all players, ArcSys is implementing various control schemes, from traditional to simplified fighting game inputs. Game Director Kazuto Sekine emphasized the intention behind choosing a 4v4 format, stating that the allure of team-based fighting games lies in the intensity and multitude of characters engaging in epic battles, reminiscent of Marvel’s comic universe.
Additionally, the game will feature stages that allow for multi-area battles similar to Guilty Gear Strive, incorporating strategic transitions, and fans can look forward to hidden Easter eggs throughout the arenas.
With this announcement, the future of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise appears uncertain, particularly after the previous Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection. The introduction of Marvel Tokon suggests that a new direction is being taken in the realm of Marvel fighting games, potentially casting doubt on the prospects of a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 in the near future.
