Manu Ginóbili, the Argentine-born Spurs icon and Basketball Hall of Famer, made an unannounced stop at Laika Cheesecakes & Espresso in San Antonio on Tuesday, delighting staff and prompting an impromptu photo session. The visit was shared by the bakery on Instagram, which posted a snapshot and the caption, "Look who decided to show up."
At roughly 6-foot-6, Ginóbili was hard to miss as he stepped into the Ukrainian-owned shop, according to the bakery’s post. A staffer wearing a Spurs pin on her apron posed for a quick picture with the four-time NBA champion, and also shot a Polaroid of the moment that the shop plans to add to its Wall of Fame. The bakery did not disclose what Ginóbili ordered during the brief visit.
Laika Cheesecakes & Espresso, which operates locations in Helotes and New Braunfels, offers an assortment of cheesecakes, coffees, frappes, refreshers and teas — including a Spurs-inspired cookies-and-cream cheesecake that has become a local favorite. The business’s Instagram post captured the spontaneous fanfare that often follows high-profile former Spurs players when they appear around the city.
Ginóbili, who helped the San Antonio Spurs secure NBA championships in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014, was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in September 2022. Though retired from professional play, he remains a beloved figure in San Antonio, where many residents remember his clutch performances and his role in one of the franchise’s most successful eras.
The stop at Laika adds to a steady stream of public appearances by the Argentine star since his retirement, reinforcing his continued ties to the city that embraced him for more than a decade. For the small bakery, the visit offered a moment of local celebrity sparkle and a tangible keepsake in the form of a Polaroid now destined for the shop’s display.
