A significant legal development occurred on Monday as Judge Lewis J. Liman dismissed Justin Baldoni’s substantial $400 million lawsuit against Blake Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. This decision also encompassed Baldoni’s separate $250 million libel lawsuit directed at the New York Times.
In his ruling, Judge Liman stated that Baldoni, along with his Wayfarer Studios, did not establish the necessary facts to hold Lively accountable for any statements beyond her previously filed complaint with the California Civil Rights Department, which are protected under legal privilege. The actress had accused Baldoni of sexual harassment in December 2024.
The judge emphasized that Baldoni’s claims regarding statements allegedly made by Reynolds and publicist Leslie Sloane lacked the requisite basis for defamation, as Baldoni had failed to provide evidence suggesting these individuals doubted the veracity of their statements.
Baldoni’s legal team now has until June 23 to amend their claims concerning breach of implied covenant and tortious interference with contract.
Lively’s attorneys hailed the ruling as a “total victory and complete vindication” for the actress, labeling Baldoni’s initial lawsuit a “sham.” They expressed intentions to seek attorney fees and pursue further damages, viewing this as the beginning of the next phase of the litigation.
