Firehouse Subs is offering a free medium steak-and-cheese melt to customers named Mike — and many of the name’s common variations — for one day only on Wednesday, May 6, the sandwich chain said.

The promotion covers those with names such as Michael, Mikey, Miguel, Mikaela, Michelle, Michele and Michaela, Firehouse Subs said in a news release. Customers whose first name is not Mike but who carry the name on a valid ID are also eligible; restaurants may request photo identification to verify the name. The deal is available only at participating U.S. locations and only on May 6.

The sandwich being given away is the chain’s new steak and cheese melt, which the company describes as flame‑seared prime rib on a top‑cut roll with provolone, brown sugar caramelized onions and red and green bell peppers. Firehouse Subs said the medium-size sandwich will be handed out while supplies last at more than 1,200 locations across the United States; the offer does not include Canadian restaurants despite some reposts of the announcement that suggested otherwise.

Firehouse Subs president Mike Hancock is at the center of the stunt. “We’re proud of this sub — the prime rib, the caramelized onions, the top‑cut roll. Once people try it, we think it earns its place among the best steak subs out there,” Hancock said in the release, adding that “sharing it with every Mike in America felt like a great way to kick things off.” The choice of the name has drawn attention beyond the company: PEOPLE reported the selection is also meant as a playful nod at competitor Jersey Mike’s.

The chain shared the promotion on social media, where it noted, “The Mikes are getting their moment, but the sub is for everyone,” underscoring that customers with eligible names need only present ID at the counter. Customers should check with local Firehouse Subs restaurants beforehand, as locations that are independently owned and operated may opt not to participate or may set distribution limits.

The giveaway follows a familiar pattern in the quick‑serve industry of limited‑time, name‑or‑date‑based promotions designed to drive foot traffic and social buzz. Chains frequently use such stunts to introduce new items or boost awareness of premium offerings, especially higher‑margin protein items like prime rib or specialty sandwiches.

Customers planning to claim the free sub should bring a valid ID showing an eligible name and arrive early; the offer is available while supplies last and only on May 6 at participating U.S. Firehouse Subs restaurants.
