Dodgers place Glasnow on 15-day IL with back spasms, recall Paul Gervase as they prep for Snell’s season debut and navigate six-man rotation

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list Thursday with lower back spasms, sidelining their veteran ace for what the club expects to be a brief absence. To provide bullpen depth for tonight’s series opener at home against the Atlanta Braves, the Dodgers recalled righty Paul Gervase from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Glasnow exited Wednesday’s start against the Houston Astros after one inning after feeling a tweak in his lower back while warming up for the second frame. He downplayed the issue in his postgame comments, calling it a recurring, minor problem, but the Dodgers elected to give him a couple of weeks of rest rather than risk aggravating the muscle spasm. The move will cost Glasnow at least two scheduled turns in the club’s rotation.

When healthy this season Glasnow has been one of the NL’s most effective starters, posting a 2.72 ERA across his first seven trips through the rotation and recording 49 strikeouts, a figure that ties him with Chris Sale for sixth in the National League. Durability, however, has long been the caveat with Glasnow: aside from the shortened 2020 campaign, he has landed on the injured list at least once every season since 2018 and has never reached 140 innings in an MLB season.

The timing complicates a Dodgers staff that will play 13 straight games and 19 of 20 days, but the club’s depth gives manager Dave Roberts options. Left-hander Emmet Sheehan is scheduled to start tonight, with Justin Wrobleski lined up for the weekend finale. Blake Snell, who has been on the injured list, is expected to be activated and make his season debut tomorrow, a move that will force the Dodgers to option a pitcher when they formally add him to the active roster.

Roberts also indicated the club is likely to hand the ball to Roki Sasaki on Monday for the series opener against the San Francisco Giants, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani set for the final two games of that series, according to reporting by The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. Glasnow’s IL stint gives the Dodgers breathing room to decide whether to alter the planned six-man rotation — it postpones a choice between bumping Sasaki or Sheehan from that structure.

Gervase’s recall appears likely to be temporary; the Dodgers will carry a nine-man bullpen for tonight but are expected to make an option move tomorrow to accommodate Snell’s activation. With the club describing Glasnow’s back issue as a short-term muscle spasm, the Dodgers are projecting a minimal IL stay, though they will monitor him closely as he works toward a return in a dense stretch of the schedule.
