Dave Coulier clarifies altered look is due to radiation side effects as throat cancer and lymphoma respond to treatment

Dave Coulier said fans should not read too much into his altered look or voice, offering a frank update on his health and recovery from two recent cancer diagnoses. In an Instagram post after a period away from social media, the 66-year-old actor — best known as Uncle Joey on Full House — explained that the visible changes are side effects of extensive radiation and treatment rather than a new, separate illness.

"What you're seeing is the side effects of extensive radiation that I went through for carcinoma in my throat," Coulier wrote, acknowledging that his speech and appearance have shifted. He added that he has been unable to eat solid food for months and has lost about 45 pounds, which he said explains why he looks thinner and sounds different to some followers. He also noted that his hair is "kind of" growing back and that recent test results have been encouraging.

Coulier first went public about a cancer recurrence on Dec. 2, 2025, when he revealed doctors found p16-positive squamous cell carcinoma — commonly described as tongue cancer — during a routine checkup after he had earlier beaten non-Hodgkin lymphoma. That lymphoma diagnosis, announced in 2024, led to chemotherapy through early 2025. He told USA TODAY at the time the new diagnosis was "a big shocker." Coulier underwent radiation for the throat carcinoma, with treatment running through Dec. 31, 2025.

Since then, Coulier has shared a mix of difficult milestones and hopeful news. He told fans the PET scans are back and "the prognosis looks good for both the carcinoma in my throat and the lymphoma," calling the results something he and his medical team are "very pleased" with. In February 2026 he had previously described the experience as a "roller coaster ride" after announcing a period of remission earlier this year.

Coulier’s public updates have alternated between candid accounts of the physical toll and expressions of gratitude for medical care and support. Radiation and surgery for head and neck cancers commonly affect swallowing, speech and appetite; weight loss and voice changes are recognized side effects that can continue into recovery. Coulier has been open about those challenges, telling followers he has not been able to eat solids and explaining how that has changed his appearance.

Friends and former Full House colleagues have previously rallied around Coulier during his health battles, and his latest post appears intended to reassure fans who have noticed his changed voice and slimmer frame. With recent scans showing positive signs, Coulier said he is "pleased" with the test results as he continues rehabilitation and recovery.
