Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced she plans to resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. Earlier this month, Disney had stated she would halt her contributions until a new candidate was chosen to lead the party.
In a response to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision to support the party again, now that Biden has officially exited the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. When announcing her previous decision to stop donations, Disney also expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s capabilities.
Disney remarked on Twitter that if the Democratic Party could unify behind Harris and overlook some of her perceived shortcomings—both in terms of race and gender—then they could secure a significant victory in the upcoming election.
Her decision to withhold donations was part of a larger trend among some Democratic elites who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s performance, particularly following a poorly received debate against former President Donald Trump. This discontent among donors is believed to have contributed to Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
